Did you know that one in every three orthodontic patients is an adult? It’s true, and this is happening for a few reasons. Orthodontic treatments used to be something we thought only teenagers went through, but that’s changing. Many adults realize it’s never too late to improve their smiles and oral health. With new advancements in alternatives to braces, like clear aligners, treatments are now less noticeable and much more appealing to adults. Plus, people are becoming more aware of how important a great smile is for personal and professional reasons. This increased awareness, coupled with the benefits of modern treatments, shows how a straighter smile can boost your confidence and improve your oral health.
Today’s treatment options are flexible and discreet, making it easier than ever for adults to have the smile they’ve always wanted. In case you haven’t heard, orthodontics isn’t just for kids anymore!
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Clear aligners like Invisalign® gradually shift your teeth into the desired position using a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners. To begin, Dr. Miller takes a 3D scan of your teeth to create a detailed digital model. Using these scans, Dr. Miller maps out a precise treatment plan, outlining each step in the movement of your teeth. We then send the treatment plan to an Invisalign lab, where skilled technicians use advanced 3D printing technology to fabricate a series of custom clear aligners.
Each set fits snugly over your teeth, applying gentle, controlled pressure to move them gradually. Each set of aligners should be worn for approximately 22 hours a day over two weeks, removing them only for eating, drinking, and brushing. As your teeth move, you’ll switch to the next set of aligners, continuing the process until your teeth are perfectly aligned. Finally, there are monitoring and adjustments. You’ll visit Dr. Miller every four to six weeks to check your progress and ensure everything’s on track. He can tweak the treatment plan to achieve the best results if needed.
Braces vs.Clear Aligner Alternatives
Exploring alternatives like clear aligners offers many benefits but isn’t always the right fit for every orthodontic issue. With Invisalign®, we effectively address various alignment issues, but there are some limitations to keep in mind. For example, clear aligners aren’t the best choice for severe overbites or underbites. These issues often require significant movement of the teeth and jaw, which clear aligners simply can’t provide. Traditional metal braces are usually the better option because they exert the necessary force to correct the alignment more effectively.
Another limitation of clear aligners is their ability to handle rotated teeth. If a tooth is rotated more than 20 degrees, clear aligners might struggle to grip it properly and apply the pressure needed to move it into the correct position. Other orthodontic treatments might be more suitable for achieving the desired alignment for such scenarios. Clear aligners are fantastic for many cases and offer the convenience and discretion that many patients love. But they are best suited for mild to moderate orthodontic corrections.
Skipping Braces and Embracing Alternatives Like Invisalign
Choosing orthodontic treatment as an adult might seem intimidating, especially since braces often conjure images of teenage years. Many people associate braces with the awkwardness of adolescence, which can make the idea of wearing them as an adult feel daunting. But guess what? It’s never too late to have the smile you’ve always wanted. With clear aligners like Invisalign®, you can straighten your teeth comfortably and discreetly at any age.
Adults love clear aligners for several great reasons. First, they’re nearly invisible, so you can go about your day at work or out with friends without worrying about noticeable braces. You can attend meetings, social events, and everything in between without feeling self-conscious. Plus, clear aligners are incredibly effective. Take Dr. Miller, for example. He used Invisalign himself and now has a great smile to show for it. His personal experience means he truly understands what you’re going through and can offer firsthand advice and support. With Invisalign, you receive more than just a treatment plan—you gain the expertise of someone who truly understands your journey towards a better smile.
