Tooth Extraction in Dallas, TX

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure that removes a damaged or decayed tooth that can’t be repaired. If the tooth is salvageable, other procedures like root canals are used. But if there’s no saving the tooth, it may be necessary to extract it to prevent additional oral health issues. If you are in need of tooth extraction, you are not alone. In Texas, over 13% of the adult population ages 65 and older reported having all of their teeth removed due to decay or gum disease. Whether you need a single tooth removed, or multiple teeth due to advanced periodontal disease, at Bent Tree Dental, we prioritize your comfort and oral health. With the advances in dental technology, we can perform tooth extraction and immediate replacement with mini dental implants on the same day.

This is a more convenient and comfortable option for you and helps prevent bone recession and other potential issues.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Tooth Extractions in Dallas, TX Emergency Dentist Dr. Rick MillerAt Bent Tree Dental, we do not take tooth extraction lightly. Our primary goal is always to preserve the presence and function of your natural teeth.

Unfortunately, there are situations where tooth extraction is the only or best solution available to maintain your oral health.

Severe Tooth Decay

If you are experiencing tooth decay or damage severe enough to reach the innermost part of the tooth (the pulp where your nerves and blood vessels are located), an infection or abscess could develop. It could even develop into sepsis, which is potentially fatal.

If a root canal isn’t possible or will not appropriately address the problem, we may decide to move forward with tooth extraction to prevent infection and relieve pain.

Advanced Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects the tissues and bones supporting the teeth. If you have periodontal disease and it reaches an advanced stage, your teeth could become loosened.

When this happens, it may be necessary to perform a tooth extraction in order to preserve the health of surrounding teeth.

Overcrowding

In some cases, your mouth simply may not have enough room for all your teeth. When this happens, it can result in overcrowding, which can affect not only your bite but also your ability to clean your teeth well.

When your bite is affected, you could get uneven wear on your teeth. An affected bite can also cause pain. If you’re unable to clean your teeth properly, you could be at risk of developing periodontal disease.

While prepping your teeth for orthodontics, we might need to extract a tooth to create the necessary space for proper alignment of your teeth and bite.

Impacted Teeth

Impacted teeth are those that haven’t been able to break through the gums the way they should. This is most commonly seen with wisdom teeth. Impacted teeth can cause:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Damage to surrounding teeth
  • Other oral health complications

In order to prevent these issues, we may extract the impacted teeth.

Risk of Infection

If you have a compromised immune system, such as in the case of individuals receiving chemotherapy, we may extract a tooth in order to avoid even the potential risk of infection. In these cases, these are preventive measures we take to avoid more serious and detrimental health issues.

Fractured or Broken Teeth or Roots

If a tooth or its root is broken or fractured beyond repair, it may be too damaged to save, which would require extraction followed by a replacement procedure like a dental implant.

Types of Tooth Extraction

There are two main types of tooth extraction — simple and surgical.

Simple Extraction

A simple extraction is non-surgical and is performed on teeth that are visible. During a simple extraction, Dr. Rick Miller loosens the tooth and removes it with specialized dental tools.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction is more complex and is employed for more serious issues, like when the tooth is impacted or is broken off at the gum line. During a surgical extraction, Dr. Miller makes a small incision into the gum to surgically remove the problem tooth.

Same-Day Tooth Replacement

In the majority of cases, we try to extract a tooth and replace it on the same day with a mini dental implant during the same procedure.

A mini dental implant is a small titanium post that serves as an artificial replacement for the root of the tooth. Once the implant is secure, we attach an artificial tooth (or crown) to the implant. This procedure helps prevent bone recession while providing you with a new tooth.

What Is Bone Recession?

Bone recession is a common issue many individuals have experienced following tooth extraction. This happens when the jawbone recedes in response to lack of stimulation since there’s no longer a tooth there.

Bone recession can change your facial structure and cause complications for future dental procedures. By replacing an extracted tooth immediately with a mini dental implant, we can mimic the stimulation your jawbone needs to prevent bone loss and protect your oral health.

Mini dental implant procedures are quicker and far less invasive than traditional dental implant surgery. Because we offer mini dental implants, you’ll be able to walk out of our office with a complete smile — even after having a tooth removed.

Post-Extraction Care and Recovery

After having a tooth extracted, you must follow post-extraction instructions so you can enjoy optimal healing and quick recovery.

We recommend you take it easy for at least 24 hours post-procedure. Give yourself time to rest and avoid activities like heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.

For the first few days after an extraction, stick to soft foods like yogurt and soup. As your extraction site heals, you can return to your normal eating habits.

Every patient’s situation is different, so depending on your extraction, we may have you schedule one or more follow-up visits so we can monitor your recovery and the replacement implant.
